Strabag opens new circular economy site for mineral construction recycling

The facility, which can process up to 250,000 tons of mineral construction and raw materials annually, is designed to reduce reliance on primary resources, cut CO₂ emissions, and ease pressure on road infrastructure through its strategic port and rail connections.

“With this new value stream management site, we are achieving another milestone in the optimisation of our regional value chain,” said Thomas Nyhsen, member of Strabag’s management board. “We are conserving scarce primary resources, reducing CO₂ emissions and efficiently covering our building material requirements. In this way, we are helping to shape the circular economy of the construction industry of tomorrow.”

Located at a logistics hub with direct access to port, road and rail, the site aims to promote short transport routes for construction materials in a densely built region. Neuss joins the company’s existing VSM locations in Düren and Oberhausen, expanding the company’s recycling network across North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. 

Materials received at the site are separated into soil and construction waste streams. Soil is reused in earthworks, while construction waste is chemically analysed and repurposed into unbound base courses for road and industrial infrastructure.

The Neuss site was built to German Sustainable Building Council standards and will be certified as a sustainable construction site. Low-temperature asphalt was used during construction to reduce energy consumption, and the site will operate using electric-powered machines and equipment running on hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO).
