A joint venture between Italian contractor Webuild and French engineering company NGE has won a €1.38 billion (US$1.5 billion) contract to design and build stations and tunnels on the Grand Paris Express.

The Grand Paris Express, scheduled to complete in 2030, is a €38 billion (US$45 billion) project to double the size of the Paris Métro.

The joint venture will be responsible Lot 2 of the western section of Line 15, which involves designing and building four underground stations and seven kilometres of tunnels using tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

Also involved in carrying out the works will be Equans France and TSO.

The joint venture pledged to use concrete with a lower carbon content, as well as choosing materials with a low environmental impact, such as bio-based and recycled materials or those produced locally and regionally.

Roofing of the stations will include greenery and 50% of the trees planted around the stations will be native species, Webuild said, as it aims to boost biodiversity.

The two companies are already collaborating on Lot 2 of Line 16.

The Grand Paris Express network will be built almost 90% underground and when finished will transport more than three million people per day.
