Medieval walls preserved in Milan metro station extension

Italy-based construction contractor Webuild has completed an extension of Milan’s Sant’Ambrogio metro station, revealing and preserving medieval-era walls as part of the finished project.

The extension – part of the broader €1.7 billion (US$1.76) Milan Metro Line 4 project – aims to provide a more “direct and convenient” transfer between the city’s M4 and M2 metro lines, Webuild said.

As part of the works, a 70m-long station tunnel corridor was built, featuring a 50m² walkable glass display case that showcases the archaeological find.

The ancient walls, measuring 35m in length, are believed to have been part of a supporting structure for the Naviglio San Gerolamo canal.

Webuild stated, “The design solution, specifically developed to preserve and highlight the discovered structures, allows passengers to walk along the very ‘bed’ of the medieval canal.

“Flanked by the original containment wall made of Lombard ‘ceppo’ stone and structures once connected to the Pusterla di Sant’Ambrogio, the corridor offers a unique journey through history.”
