US firm to manage construction of US$2.2bn rail expansion at California port
15 August 2025
US-based engineering and construction firm Jacobs was awarded a contract to provide construction management services for the Port of Long Beach’s Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility in California, US, part of a US$2.2 billion programme aimed at boosting cargo handling efficiency and cutting emissions.

The project will expand the existing rail yard from 82 to 171 acres and more than triple the port’s on-dock rail capacity to handle up to 4.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) annually. The Port of Long Beach is already among the largest container docks in the country.
Delivery will span ten separate construction contracts. Jacobs will oversee the full programme, which the port authority said will support more than 1,000 local jobs and contribute to health and environmental initiatives in the region.
The expansion is expected to reduce road traffic, lower emissions and improve air quality in surrounding communities. Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero said the project will also allow more cargo to move through marine terminals “with greater efficiency and less impacts on the community,” while accommodating a peak construction workload.
Jacobs described the Pier B expansion as a cornerstone of the port’s rail modernisation strategy and a key component in strengthening supply chain resilience for one of the busiest container gateways in the US.
A value for the contract to Jacobs was not available.
Construction initiation started last year. First-phase completion is scheduled for 2026, with the full project expected to finish in 2032.
