The proposed expansion plans, presented by the US-based Rafael Viñoly Architects, include a new 50,000m2 terminal, complete with a unique 77,000m2 rooftop vineyard.

According to the architectural firm, the vineyard will be managed and harvested by a prominent Tuscan vintner, with the winemaking process taking place in cellars situated directly beneath the terminal’s roof.

In addition to the vineyard, the plans the plans include the construction of a new light rail system to enhance transportation to and from the airport.

Runway revolution

A central ‘piazza’ is also planned, to provide a public area for retail venues and improving the overall flow through the terminal.

A significant aspect of the project involves lengthening and reorienting the current airport runway by 90 degrees, to prevent the nearby hills inhibiting the operational capacity of modern aircraft.

The proposed development is slated to be undertaken in two phases, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2026. The second phase is scheduled for completion in 2035.

Once the expansion project is completed, the terminal is expected to accommodate close to six million international passengers annually.
