Work starts on new phase of expansion at UK’s Manchester Airport

Work has started on the construction of a new pier at the UK’s Manchester Airport Group (MAG), in the latest phase of its €1.5 billion Transformation Programme.

The pier will connect to the airport’s Terminal 2 and is the largest element in this phase of the expansion project.

The new pier will feature 12 boarding gates and flexible aircraft stands capable of accommodating next-generation planes.

It will also be equipped to handle the Airbus A380, currently the largest passenger aircraft in operation.

The airport insists construction of the pier will prioritise sustainability, employing techniques to reduce embodied carbon emissions by up to 40%.

Modern methods of construction

This will include pre-casting concrete elements and minimising excavation work through a piling solution.

Lead contractor Mace will utilise an off-site manufacturing approach, assembling nodes and links in a ‘kit of parts’ to expedite on-site construction and minimise disruptions to the airfield.

This phase of the airport’s Transformation Programme second phase will include the construction of second security hall, an extended departure lounge and reconfigurations of the airfield to enhance operational efficiency.

By the project’s completion in 2025, Manchester Airport estimates that approximately 80% of passengers will use the expanded Terminal 2, which will also host 27 new shops, bars, and restaurants.

Local job creation

This phase of development is set to create over 500 construction jobs and Mace has committed to engaging 1,500 young people across Greater Manchester.

The company has also set a target of ensuring at least 5% of the workforce consists of apprentices throughout the project.

Carl Dainter, head of global aviation for Mace Consult, said, “This exciting next phase of Manchester Airport’s transformation is giving us the opportunity to implement ideas, methodologies and solutions that will allow us to speed up delivery, reduce carbon and, crucially, minimise impact to the live airfield operations.

“This is only possible due to the collaborative and integrated relationship with have with the client and supply chain. By working as one team with shared values and objectives, we’re making excellent progress toward our 2025 open-to-passengers target.”
