Heidelberg’s new low-carbon, circular products brand

Heidelberg Materials has unveiled a new brand of cement, concrete and aggregate products to “set new standards” in decarbonisation

The Germany-based building materials company announced a new line of sustainable products – evoBuild – just a few months after the launch of its first sustainability brand, evoZero, a carbon captured net-zero cement product.

“We recently introduced our evoZero brand for the world’s first carbon captured net-zero cement,” said Dr Dominik von Achten, chairman of the company’s managing board.

“Now, we are adding evoBuild to the evo brand family with a new framework for all products that are characterised by their special contribution to carbon reduction and circularity.”

The evoBuild line includes cement and concrete products, the company says, designed to acute standards to achieve circularity or sustainability goals (or a combination of both). The evo-branded materials are categorised into tiers, Heidlberg said, to increase transparency for the consumer.

Heidelberg’s chief sustainability officer, Dr Nicola Kimm, noted the new offerings are designed to aid the company and its clients in achieving carbon-reduction initiatives.

“The launch of evoBuild means that we are now applying the same clear criteria for sustainable products to all our group companies around the world,” said Kimm.

“The consistent evoBuild tiering is based on our sustainability strategy and significantly increases transparency towards our customers and stakeholders. This is an important step towards achieving one of our key targets on the way to net zero as we aim to generate 50% of our revenue with sustainable products by 2030.”

According to Heidelberg’s standards, evoBuild low-carbon products must provide a CO₂ reduction of at least 30% (using 2020 CEM I testing data from the Global Cement and Concrete Association), which is ≤552 kg CO₂/t in cementitious material and ≤5.5 kg CO₂/m3/MPa for ready-mixed concrete.

evoBuid’s circular products must contain at least 30% recycled aggregates or reduce material requirements by at least 30%. The company noted its specialised 3D-printing dry-mix mortar as an example.
