Consortium building US$5bn ‘record’ hospital expansion

Canada-based PCL Construction – through regional affiliate PCL Constructors Canada – will serve as design-build contractor, while sister firm PCL Investments will act as equity investor, for the Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project at Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre.

PCL is tasked with constructing a 14-storey acute car tower, which will contain modern medical technology, a satellite diagnostic imaging department, and new lab and treatment spaces.

It’s believed to be the ‘largest healthcare infrastructure construction project’ in history across Canada’s four most easternly provinces: New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Plenary Americas (Canada) is listed as an investor and developer, with Dutch Arcadis and Canada-based B+H Architects on design. US and Ireland-based Johnson Controls is listed as facilities manager, with Smith + Andersen (Canada) working as mechanical and electrical consultants, US-based Univex as electrical contractor and Modern Niagara (Canada) as mechanical contractor.

Initial works started last year with the main phase of construction anticipated to start this spring. Completion is expected in 2030, with the facility planned to open to the public the following year.
