The Australian government has confirmed that it will contribute A$3.4 billion (US$2.25 billion) towards the A$7.1 billion cost of building new venues for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

The games involve the construction or upgrade of 17 venues, with taxpayers in the state of Queensland and private investors paying the balance of the money required.

The news paves the way for construction to start. There will be a total of six new venues, including: the 63,000-seater Brisbane Stadium, an oval venue that will later become the home of cricket and AFL in the city; Logan Indoor Sports Centre; Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre; National Aquatic Centre with 8,000 permanent seats and a temporary capacity for 25,000; Para Sport Facility; Redland Whitewater Centre.

The 11 venues to receive an upgrade are: Anna Meares Velodrome; Barlow Park Stadium; Brisbane Aquatic Centre; Brisbane International Shooting Centre; Brisbane SX International BMX Centre; Chandler Sports Precinct; Queensland Tennis Centre; Rockhampton Rowing Facility; Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre; Sunshine Coast Stadium; Toowoomba Showgrounds.

In a statement, Australia’s Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said, “We are ready to deliver a Brisbane 2032 games that will leave the same incredible legacy for Queensland.

“The Australian government’s commitment of A$3.4 billion towards the Games venues is the single largest contribution any Australian government has made towards sporting infrastructure in this country.”

Brisbane won the hosting rights for the games in 2021 but political disagreements over the venues meant that the final plans were only decided in March this year.
