Caterpillar and Codelco launch pilot of diesel-electric truck charging system

Caterpillar’s Dynamic Energy Transfer (DET) system is to be tested through its diesel-electric extraction trucks in an open-pit mine in Chile, operated by state-owned copper company Codelco.

The system transfers electricity directly to the machines while on the move, including both current trucks and future battery-powered electric trucks. DET is comprised of a series of integrated elements, including a power module that converts energy from a mine site’s power source, an electrified rail system to transmit the energy and a machine system to transfer the energy to the truck’s powertrain.

The system transfers electricity directly to the machines while on the move, including both current trucks and future battery-powered electric trucks. By using Cat DET, the site will consume less fuel, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and extend the engine life of trucks.

Codelco is testing the technology as part of its commitment to decarbonisation and sustainability.

“We are steadily moving towards mining of the future,” said Felipe Lagno, Codelco’s corporate manager for Innovation and Technology, who explains that, according to preliminary calculations, truck emissions could be reduced by 60% to 70%.

“We have the opportunity to reduce our environmental impact and extend the life of our trucks without compromising productivity. Every project linked to technological innovation brings us closer to our purpose of being a cornerstone of sustainable development for Chile and the world.”

The pilot is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026 in open-label operations. The test, which is expected to last about a year, will involve Cat 798 AC trucks and the installation of rails on one of the ramps where the machines operate.

“This pilot program is the result of an extensive collaboration between Codelco, Finning S.A. and Caterpillar, and will allow Caterpillar to continue to perfect and improve the design and functionality of our Cat DET system, incorporating the voice of the customer,” said Marc Cameron, senior vice president of Caterpillar.

“Together, we are not only transforming the way fleets will operate on the site, but also paving the way for a more sustainable tomorrow.”

Cat dealer, Finning S.A., will also contribute to the success of the test by assisting in the installation and maintenance of the Cat DET system.
