A consortium of construction firms has won a design‑build‑finance contract worth CAN$1.4 billion (US$1 billion) for the advance tunnelling component of the Yonge North Subway Extension.

The winning consortium, North End Connectors, comprises Aecon Infrastructure Management, Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada, and Ghella Canada, with design services provided by EXP Services and Typsa.

Scope of work includes the design and construction of a 6.3‑kilometre twin‑tunnel segment extending from Toronto’s Finch Station to just south of Langstaff Road in Markham. The contract covers the supply of tunnel‑boring machines, construction of launch and extraction shafts, installation of precast concrete lining, and construction of headwalls for future stations and emergency exits.

Early works have already start, with utility relocations along the route in progress. Full tunnelling construction will begin once detailed design is finalised.

The Yonge North Subway Extension will extend TTC Line 1 service by around eight kilometres northward, and involves the construction of five new stations. The project is expected to reduce travel times between Markham and downtown Toronto by up to 22 minutes.

A new Bridge Station hub will improve connectivity, offering seamless transfers to GO Transit and local bus services.

This project is part of a broader expansion of the region’s transit infrastructure which aims to position hundreds of thousands of residents within walking distance of rapid transit.
