Contractor bags US$1.9 billion New York Midtown Bus Terminal redevelopment deal
01 July 2025

US-based contractor Tutor Perini has won a US$1.9 billion contract to build the staging and storage facility and ramp structure components of the Midtown Bus Terminal Redevelopment in New York City.
The scope of the work includes construction of a seven-floor, steel-clad storage and staging facility located between 9th and 10th Avenues and between West 39th and West 40th Streets.
The building will accommodate storage for up to 350 buses and serve as a temporary bus terminal during construction of a new main bus terminal.
Meanwhile, a new ramp structure will encompass the block bounded by 10th and 11th Avenues and 39th and 40th Streets, which will allow buses to move in and out of the above-grade bus levels of the replacement facility to and from the Lincoln Tunnel.
Work is expected to start in the autumn of 2025, with completion in autumn 2028.
The overhaul of the Midtown Bus Terminal is expected to cost $10 billion in total.
Earlier this year, Aecom Tishman won a deal to manage the Dyer Avenue deck-overs project, which were the first contracts awarded under the scheme. The new deck-overs wil provide a stating area for city buses during the larger construction timeline. Before completion of the terminal upgrade, the deck-overs will be transformed into 3.5 acres of public green space.
Commenting on Tutor Perini’s contract award, Gary Smalley, chief executive officer and president of Tutor Perini, said, “We are excited to be a part of this transformational project, which will significantly improve the quality of life and regional transportation for commuters throughout the New York City metropolitan region.
“Tutor Perini has a long and successful track record of partnering with the Port Authority to deliver large, complex transportation infrastructure projects, including most recently Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal A. We look forward to continuing to partner with this important customer to successfully deliver this latest project.”
