Nordics-based contractor NCC has secured a contract worth about SEK 7.5 billion (€650 million) from Sweden’s state owned power transmission system operator, Svenska kraftnät, to construct more than 440km (273.4 miles) of power lines in Västra Götaland County, western Sweden.

The long-term programme, expected to run for around ten years, will involve extending an existing corridor of overhead power lines and decommissioning parts of the current network.

The works form part of Svenska kraftnät’s bundled procurement strategy and will be delivered through a strategic partnering agreement with NCC. Planning is due to begin immediately, with construction contracts to be signed in stages for individual sub-projects.

Kenneth Nilsson, head of NCC Infrastructure, said the deal would enable knowledge sharing across the programme and deliver economies of scale. NCC recently established a specialist division for major energy distribution projects and has previously worked with Svenska kraftnät on power lines in the Gothenburg area and substations in Stockholm.

Svenska kraftnät said the investment is critical to supporting electrification and industrial growth in Västra Götaland, home to Gothenburg and one of Sweden’s most industrialised regions.
