Nanotech firm says it can turn desert sand into building material

Thailand-based nanotech firm Doctor T has developed a new material called DRT-Sand, which aims to turn desert and ocean sand into usable construction inputs through a proprietary nanofilm coating.

The product is being pitched as a sustainable alternative to traditional river sand, which is facing growing global shortages.
According to Doctor T, the coated sand is water-resistant, dust-proof, and weather-tolerant, making it suitable for use in cement mixes, blocks, roads, and water infrastructure, particularly in arid and coastal regions.
The company said pilot projects will begin in late 2025 in the Middle East and Africa (MENA) region, targeting water management and low-carbon infrastructure. A broader rollout is planned from 2026.
“DRT-Sand exemplifies our vision to turn overlooked resources into strategic assets,” said Doctor T CEO, Thiti Jirawatcharakorn.
Doctor T, best known for its TPoxy and synthetic-wood products, said it is seeking partners and investors to support global scaling of the new material by 2027–2028.
