Construction work has now resumed at a Meta data centre in New Albany, Ohio, USA, after the site was evacuated earlier this week over an incident involving a firearm.

A worker on the site who had been fired allegedly threatened his supervisor with a firearm he had concealed in a bag.

Security personnel managed to take possession of the gun and the worker ran off and got into a vehicle, according to reports.

The incident on Monday 17 November led to contractor Turner Construction Company evacuating more than a thousand workers from the site as a precaution.

A spokesman for Turner said, “An individual who had recently been released from employment for unexcused absences arrived at the site and made threats toward a supervisor. Onsite security personnel noticed he had a weapon and were able to safely take possession of it. The individual left the site without the weapon.

“Law enforcement was immediately notified and responded to the scene. Out of an abundance of caution, work was paused and the site was evacuated.

“The safety and security of everyone on our job sites is our top priority, and we are grateful for the prompt actions of those on site and the swift response by local authorities.”

Meta’s founder Mark Zuckerberg said in July this year that Prometheus will be a 1 GW ‘super cluster’ is due to come online in 2026. Meta is expected to be one of the first tech companies to control an AI data centre of this size when it comes online.
