OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced an agreement with computer technology firm Oracle to develop 4.5GW of additional data centre capacity in the US.

OpenAI said that together with its Stargate I site in Abilene, Texas, the partnership with Oracle would take it to over 5GW of Stargate AI data centre capacity under development, running over two million chips.

It added that it expected the move to create over 100,000 jobs in construction and operations roles.

However, it did not give further details on exactly where it will build the new data centre capacity, nor what the timeline for the construction would be.

In a statement about the expansion, OpenAI said, “This significantly advances our progress toward the commitment we announced at the White House in January to invest $500 billion into 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure in the U.S. over the next four years. We now expect to exceed our initial commitment thanks to strong momentum with partners including Oracle and SoftBank.”
