At a meeting in Belgrade earlier in the year, Olivér Várhelyi said the European Union was “ready to move very, very fast” to aid the delivery of a terminal in the Balkans, but that a final location had not been agreed.

At a recent meeting in the Albanian capital Tirana, he said it was working with Montenegro, with a view to establishing the terminal in Bar.

According to a report in Balkan Green Energy News, a memorandum has been signed, which references the LNG terminal, but also the construction of a gas-fired power plant, which would be fuelled by the terminal.

In a statement, the Montengran Prime Minister Dritan Abazović said the terminal project would be of historical significance, making Montenegro a hub for other countries in the region, and increasing energy security, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
