Microsoft to build $3bn AI data center in Wisconsin
22 September 2025
Microsoft is to build a second artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Wisconsin, US, for a cost of approximately US$3 billion. The project will join a $3.3 billion data center in the southeastern corner of the state, announced last year, and bring the company’s spending in the state to over US$7 billion.

Microsoft said the initial data center remains on track to open next year and will employ about 500 people at its peak, expanding to about 800 once the second data center is complete.
It said that, with the addition of the second large-scale data center, the site would eventually house the world’s most powerful AI supercomputer, connecting together hundreds of thousands of powerful chips from Nvidia.
Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith, said a feature of the data center is sustainability.
More than 90% of it will rely on a closed-loop liquid cooling system that will be filled during construction and recirculated continuously.
The remaining portion of the facility will use outside air for cooling, switching to water on the hottest days, to minimise environmental impact.
