Lane, the US subsidiary of Italy’s Webuild Group, has won a US$337 million (€288 million) deal to widen and modernise the Interstate 85 (I-85) in Gaston County, North Carolina, USA.

The design and build contract, commissioned by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, involves approximately 16 kilometres (4.1 miles) of the I-85 in the section between NC 7 (Exit 23) and NC 273 (Exit 27).

The highway will be widened from six to eight lanes, while six bridges will either be widened or replaced, and two interchanges reconstructed, with the aim of improving safety and traffic flow for commuters in the Charlotte metropolitan area.

The contract also includes the improvement to intersection between Belmont Mount Holly Road and the US 29/74.

Works, to be carried out without suspension of traffic, are set to be completed by 2029.
