Construction company Samsung C&T E&C (engineering and construction group) has won Qatar’s largest solar power project to date, making the biggest capacity solar project a Korean construction company has ever undertaken.

Samsung C&T E&C will build the 2,000MW facility, worth KRW 1.46 trillion (US$1 billion) on a 27 sq km site in Dukhan.

The project involves erecting 2.74 million solar panels and it will supply electricity to 750,000 households by 2030.

Samsung C&T E&C will manage the project from design through construction, implementing technology like solar tracking systems to follow the sun’s path and optimise power generation.

A signing ceremony involved top executives from both Samsung C&T and QatarEnergy, including the Samsung C&T’s president & CEO Se-chul Oh, and Saad Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s minister of state for energy affairs and CEO of QatarEnergy.

“Through our long-standing partnerships and strong track record in Qatar, we have strengthened our leadership in renewable energy EPC,” said Seongjoon Kim, executive vice president of Samsung C&T’s ES Business Division.
