Holcim to expand in Spain, UK and Greece

Switzerland-based building materials and aggregates company announced a trio of acquisitions in January, which it said will expand its portfolio in “green growth”

Holcim purchased a majority stake in Artepref (Spain) and acquired W.A.T.T. Recycling (Greece) and Eco-Readymix (UK), it announced last month.

Artepref specialises in precast concrete solutions and structural systems for industrial, commercial and logistics applications.

W.A.T.T. is a waste management company. It provides solutions to recover paper, plastics, metals, while also producing fuel. It has two material recovery facilities near Athens, which have a processing capacity of more than 150,000 tonnes of municipal waste annually.

Eco-Readymix is a concrete and mortar producer and supplier. It has two operational sites and one due to open. It offers mortars along with ready-mix concrete, liquid and traditional screed, concrete masonry blocks and aggregates. Its Wrexham, UK, site is almost entirely powered by renewable energy, from biomass to wind and solar, said Holcim.

The company noted the purchases fit their strategic acquisition plan. In a recent announcement of a new CEO, the company said it plans to focus on decarbonisation and mergers and acquisitions as drivers of growth.

“All three value-accretive acquisitions contribute to Holcim’s objective of expanding solutions and products to at least 30% of net sales by 2025, while leading in decarbonization as a driver of profitable growth,” stated the company.

Miljan Gutovic, Holcim region head for Europe, added, “[The acquisitions are] fully in line with our strategy. They expand our range of innovative and sustainable solutions in high-growth markets.”
