European construction output jumps 3.9% in January

In January, construction output in the euro area saw a rise of 3.9%, compared with the previous month, according to latest Eurostat figures.

In this month’s euroindicators report, the statistics and data arm of the European Commission also reported that seasonally adjusted production only in the EU was up by 3.5%.

Production was also up compared with the January 2022, by 0.9% in the euro area and by 1.4% in the EU.

Month-on-month, building construction in the eurozone increased by 4.2%, with civil engineering up by 3.0%.

In its annual comparison, the eurozone figures were not so positive, with building construction up by 1.4% in January 2023, compared with January 2022. As for civil engineering, output was down -1.9%.

From a regional perspective, Eurostat highlighted the biggest uplift in production was in Germany (+12.6%), Slovenia (+9.8%) and Poland (+7.0%).

At the other end of the scale, the largest drop in production was seen in Hungary (-5.0%), Romania (-4.3%) and Belgium (-1.5%).
