Eiffage wins €1.5bn EPCIC contract for three French offshore wind substations

French contractor Eiffage, via its Belgian subsidiary Smulders, secured an engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning contract with France’s transmission system operator, RTE, to develop and construct three alternating current substations for the Bretagne Sud, Narbonnaise Sud-Hérault, and Golfe de Fos offshore wind farms.

The contract is valued at more than €1.5 billion (US$1.8 billion) and includes future extensions.

The project covers the design, manufacture, assembly, and commissioning of jacket foundations and topside structures for each substation. The Bretagne Sud jackets will measure 115m high, 25m wide, and 35m long, while the Narbonnaise Sud-Hérault and Fos jackets will be approximately 110m high, 45m wide, and 50m long. The topsides will weigh around 5,000 tonnes and measure over 20m high, 35m wide, and 70m long.

Each substation will have a 750MW capacity, collectively connecting more than 2GW of decarbonised electricity to the French power transmission grid.

All components will be manufactured in Smulders’ and its industrial partners’ facilities in France and Europe. Jackets will be assembled at Eiffage Métal’s Fos-sur-Mer site and topsides at Vlissingen in the Netherlands.

The award strengthens Eiffage’s European renewable energy presence, following its acquisition of HSM Offshore Energy. Smulders has previously completed 40 substations and manufactured more than 2,500 transition pieces in the segment, contributing to projects including Dogger Bank, Hollandse Kust, Saint-Nazaire, and Provence Grand Large.
