Webuild to construct US$1.2bn maternity and neonatal hospital in Australia

Italy-based contractor Webuild has been awarded a €1.1 billion (US$1.2 billion) contract to build the new Women and Babies Hospital in Perth, Australia.

The project, commissioned by the Government of Western Australia, will consolidate maternity, gynaecology, and neonatal services currently split between King Edward Memorial Hospital and Perth Children’s Hospital.

Webuild leads the venture as design and construction head, with Australian EPC firm Clough (subsidiary of Webuild) acting as delivery partner. Originally, as preferred bidders, Clough held a 70% stake in project, with Australian construction firm Roberts Co holding 30%. Roberts has since entered voluntary adminstration, prompting Webuild to take on the full contract with Clough.

The new facility will include 300 beds, eight operating theatres, specialist neonatal intensive care services, and expanded outpatient care.

Construction will take place in an active hospital precinct, requiring staged delivery to avoid disruption to existing operations.

Western Australia Premier Roger Cook described the project as “transformational,” citing long-standing calls to replace the century-old King Edward Memorial Hospital.

“This state-of-the-art facility will ensure the best care for WA women and babies, now and into the future,” he said during the contract announcement.

Webuild said the contract adds to its growing portfolio in Australia, where it has around 1,800 employees and more than $13 billion worth of infrastructure projects under way, including major rail and road works.

Construction of medical centre is expected later this year, pending final design and site preparation works. The project is scheduled for completion in 2029 and is part of a wider redevelopment of the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre campus.
