The announcement was made by Vinci Concessions’ CEO, Nicolas Notebaert, during his recent visit to the airport in Northern Ireland.

The investment, to be deployed over the next five years, will incorporate the ongoing €28.7 million development of a state-of-the-art security hall at the airport.

The departure area is also set to undergo significant enhancements, including the addition of extra departure gates and increased seating capacity.

Set to be completed by June 2024, the facility will introduce 3D scanners as part of the UK Government mandated plan for all airports.

Boost for travellers

This technology is intended to enhance the security screening process, eliminating the need for the 100ml liquid rule for boarding aircraft and allowing passengers to leave liquids and electrical items in their bags during security checks.

As a result, it is expected to significantly expedite the security screening process and reduce waiting times, offering a more efficient experience for travellers.

New catering and retail outlets will be introduced and the immigration area will be extended over the next five years, ensuring smoother immigration processes.

The investment plan is expected to generate approximately 400 construction jobs over the course of the five-year project.

Back in profit

The Vinci announcement follows Belfast International’s announcement of a return to profit in 2022, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s recovery.

The airport saw passenger numbers double and its total turnover nearly doubled from €24.8 million to €46.7 million, resulting in a profit of €5.2 million.

The airport has also reported a strong nine months in 2023, with passenger numbers up 22% compared with the previous year. This resurgence can be attributed to the return of Ryanair and the expansion of EasyJet’s operations at the airport.
