Elon Musk’s Boring Company developing 10-mile tunnel around Nashville

Called the Music City Loop, the 10-mi underground system would carry passengers in Tesla vehicles, with estimated travel times of eight to ten minutes.

Construction is expected to begin once regulatory approvals are secured, though the project is likely to face political pushback.

The state of Tennessee has agreed to lease underground highway right-of-way to Boring to construction the tunnel under a 50-year agreement. No public funding or tax incentives will be used, officials said.

The project is designed to avoid surface road closures and limit construction disruption. Tunnelling will take place under Murfreesboro Pike and other state roads, with staging based on a site approved by the Tennessee State Building Commission. Boring Company saidthe system will meet or exceed fire and life safety codes, and will follow standard environmental review procedures.

If approved, the first phase is expected to open in late 2026. A final cost estimate has not been released.
