Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin met with the consortium led by Dubai’s Emaar Group founder Mohammed Alabbar, in collaboration with Middle Eastern and Chinese firms, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand.

The move would be part of a bid to rejuvenate Thailand’s economy and the proposal aims to incorporate a large department store, office spaces, a financial hub, a hotel and an entertainment centre.

“The potential tower project is seen as a major opportunity to create a new man-made tourist attraction that could increase visitor numbers to Thailand,” a statement issued via the National News Bureau of Thailand said.

Tourism accounts for around 12% of Thailand’s GDP and the country has seen arrivals increase to near pre-pandemic levels as it eases visa policies and travel regulations.

The world’s tallest building is currently the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 828m. However, work has reportedly resumed on the Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, which would surpass that at 1km tall. And UK architecture firm Foster + Partners is reportedly designing a 2km supertall tower in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
