Implenia wins $123 million contract for Swedish nuclear waste site

The project, commissioned by Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB), involves the design and construction of an underground facility near the Forsmark nuclear power plant. The build includes installation of a 500m-deep access tunnel, vertical shafts, a central hub, and extensive main and transport tunnels.

SKB ultimately plans to expand the site to around 66km of tunnels across 4km², with capacity for 12,000 tonnes of radioactive material.

Planning is set to begin in autumn 2025, with completion targeted for 2033.
