Marsh launches €1bn insurance facility to support data centre construction in UK and Europe

Risk advisor and insurance broker Marsh has announced the launch of a new insurance facility, aimed at supporting the construction of large-scale data centres across the UK and continental Europe.

The facility, named Nimbus, is backed by a panel of insurers operating across Lloyd’s and company markets in both London and Europe. It offers clients up to €1 billion in construction all-risks coverage, alongside an additional €350 million in protection for delay in start-up.

According to Marsh, the facility brings together several lines of insurance cover, including construction all-risks, delay in start-up, property damage, and business interruption, in a single package.

The introduction of Nimbus follows Marsh’s earlier rollout of its Data Centre Insurance and Risk Management Services, a suite of products intended to address evolving risks within the data centre sector and to provide insurance solutions throughout the full lifecycle of these assets.

Commenting on the launch, Kelly Looney, UK CEO, Construction, Infrastructure & Surety at Marsh Specialty, noted the increasing strategic importance of data centres, referring to them as a “fourth utility” in today’s digital economy. Looney said the new offering is designed to support the technology sector’s infrastructure demands by streamlining insurance provision and helping to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Data centres have seen sustained investment growth across Europe, driven by rising demand for cloud services, AI processing capacity, and digital infrastructure resilience. The development of facilities often involves complex construction programmes with tight timelines and significant financial exposure, making bespoke risk management solutions increasingly relevant.
