Startup raises $80m to automate US construction fleets

Bedrock Robotics has raised US$80 million in seed and Series A funding to roll out autonomous retrofit kits for existing heavy equipment, with early deployments already underway across the US.

The California-based startup, founded by former engineers from Waymo, Tesla, and Uber Freight, said its Bedrock Operator system can be installed on machines like excavators and wheel loaders in less than a day. Once fitted, the system enables 24/7 operation without an onboard operator.

Bedrock says the technology is designed to plug directly into existing fleet workflows, removing the need to purchase new autonomous machines.

Initial field deployments are active in Texas, Arizona, and Arkansas, in partnership with contractors including Sundt Construction, Zachry Construction, Champion Site Prep and Capitol Aggregates.

The funding round was led by Eclipse and 8VC, with participation from Valor Equity Partners, Two Sigma Ventures, NVIDIA’s venture arm, Raine Ventures, and real estate firm Tishman Speyer.

Bedrock said it’s positioning its retrofit platform as a response to widespread operator shortages and rising labour costs. Citing value of more than $120 billion for annual excavation work across the country, Bedrock said it aims to achieve fully operator-less commercial deployment in 2026.
