Wyaralong Dam consortium announced

Queensland Dam Consortium - Macmahon Contractors, Wagners Quarries, ASI Constructors, Hydro Tasmania, Rizzo Australia and SMEC Australia - has been appointed to build the AU$ 348 million (US$ 266 million) Wyaralong Dam near Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia by Queensland Water Infrastructure (QWI).

Announcing the decision, Australia's Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchcliffe, said, "The Queensland Dam Consortium will hit the ground running and provide up to 40 jobs over the next month with detailed design and site investigations."

Major construction work will start by the end of the year and the workforce will peak at 420 by mid next year, added Mr Hinchliffe.

Construction of the 500 m-long, 48 m-high dam is expected to be complete by 2011.

In conjunction with the nearby Cedar Grove Weir, the Wyaralong Dam will provide an extra 21000 million litres of water every year, enough for about 300000 people.

QWI CEO Graeme Newton also announced civil contractor Fulton Hogan has been appointed as preferred contractor for the upgrade to the Beaudesert-Boonah Road, as part of the Wyaralong Dam project.

Background

The Wyaralong Dam is located on the Teviot Brook, approximately 14 km northwest of Beaudesert in the Logan River Catchment.

Construction on the Wyaralong Dam Project commenced in late 2008, with the Water Infrastructure Solutions Alliance (WISA) delivering a preconstruction works package, including a 5.5 km sealed access road and construction water pipeline.
