‘World’s first’ electric breaker revealed

Finnish technology company Lekatech has revealed what is thought to be the world’s first electric hammer attachment.

Powered by the company’s patented linear electric motor technology, Lekatech’s electric breaker is designed for use with electric powered excavators.

According to the manufacturer, which began developing the product in 2016, the hammer is 70% more energy efficient that conventional breakers, thanks to its “seamless integration” with the carrier machine.

The Lekatech hammer is also said to provide double the impact energy of that offered by traditional hydraulic hammers, measured at 1,300 to 1,500 joules, as well a 98% reduction in oil consumption.

“Our technological breakthrough not only enables more energy-efficient earthmoving and mining operations, but also strengthens the realization of a green transition in these fields,” said Antti Anttila, CEO of Lekatech.

Antti added: “We are proud of the strides we have taken over the past five years in developing linear motor technology.”

Lekatech, which raised over €10 million to develop the breaker, with a €6.3 million investment made last year from the European Union’s investment and support funds, previously created six prototype breakers and recently the first class size of the electric hammer underwent a round of user testing.

The company says it has now designed the production line for the electric hammer and that it is currently seeking manufacturers to partner with on the main production phase.
