Webuild completes 24km of Brenner Base Tunnel
24 May 2022
A 24km tunnel that makes up one part of the Brenner Base Tunnel has now been completed says Webuild. The project, which will become the longest railway tunnel in the world on completion, will connect the Italian town of Fortezza with Innsbruck in Austria.
The milestone was reached with the breakthrough of a diaphragm built by Webuild separating lots H71 Isarco River Underpass on the Italian side and Mules 2-3, with help from tunnelling specialist Ghella.
In addition to the main four tunnels, the project will feature a network of 230km of tunnels and spaces — 151km of which have already been excavated.
The project is part of the TEN-T, the High Speed/High Capacity network which will transport people and goods throughout the continent. This is supposed to encourage sustainable mobility among the EU by shifting more people and cargo from road to rail.
