US$14 million school construction contract awarded
14 February 2024
Construction outfit NCC, based in Sweden, secured a contract from Kinda Municipality to convert and expand Rimforsa school in Östergötland, Sweden, for SEK 150 million (€13 million).
NCC’s final build will include 21 classrooms and auxiliary spaces for as many as 483 pupils aged five to 12 years old.
The updates are to structures built as long ago as the 1950s, though some portions will be demolished and rebuilt, while others will be retained and refurbished.
“The new building will have two floors with classrooms, a cloakroom, recreation areas, and a kitchen with a canteen that will connect to the existing school building,” confirmed NCC.
Where retention and refurbishment is called for, NCC noted surfaces (like floors, walls, tiling, doors, fixtures, and ceilings) will be replaced and updated to match the new buildings to “harmonise the design throughout the school.”
Project commencement is expected in quarter two of 2024.
“The first step with NCC as the contractor will be to demolish the canteen, and then parts of the school will be relocated and one area will be closed off for the safety of students and staff,” said Ida Härnström, project manager for Kinda Municipality.
Completion of the project is expected in autumn 2026.
