The UK’s Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, has indicated that the government is “minded to approve” plans for a second runway at London Gatwick Airport provided it meets certain environmental conditions.

The runway, which would be privately funded, is expected to cost around £2.2 billion to build.

However, a final decision on whether to give it the green light has been pushed back until 27 October this year.

Gatwick has a second runway already but it is currently only used as a standby as it sits too close to the main runway.

The Airport’s construction plans involve moving that standby runway by 12 metres to allow both to function at the same time.

The Planning Inspectorate initially rejected Gatwick’s plans over concerns around noise prevention around public transport.

Gatwick has not yet indicated if it will adjust its plans to meet the conditions and has until 24 April to respond to the new proposals.
