UK eases visa rules for foreign builders

The UK government has made it easier for foreign builders to come to Britain due to labour shortages, in part caused by Brexit. They have added bricklayers, plasterers, and other construction jobs to the “shortage occupation list”, reports the Guardian.

In response to severe worker shortages in various sectors, the Home Office has relaxed visa restrictions. Now, those working in these shortage occupations can be paid 80% of the job’s going rate and still qualify for a skilled worker visa, benefiting from a reduced application fee. To be eligible, applicants need a sponsored job offer from an employer and must meet English language requirements.

The government’s decision to include these occupations on the list is aimed at supporting the delivery of critical national infrastructure projects and stimulating growth in related industries.

In March, the independent migration advisory committee recommended adding construction workers to the shortage occupation list.

The construction industry in Britain has long struggled with worker shortages, which Brexit exacerbated. Furthermore, the Covid-19 pandemic led many EU workers to return to their home countries, aggravating the labor gaps in the construction sector.
