A joint venture between US-based construction company Tutor Perini and O&G Industries is in pole position to build one of four new jails that will replace New York City’s infamous Rikers Island Jail Complex.

The joint venture has been named by the New York City Department of Design and Construction as ‘Apparent Selected Proposer’ to design and build the new Manhattan Jail Facility, amid plans to eventually close and decommission Rikers Island.

Tutor Perini said it expected to be negotiating contractual terms and pricing for the multi-billion-dollar project.

The new facility will contain 886 beds and provide 125 accessory parking spaces for all staff and service providers. There will be 20,000 sq ft of community and commercial space on the ground floor.

Tutor Perini will be the managing partner, with O&G Industries as the 25% partner. Architecture firm HOK will design the facility.

Last year, Tutor Perini won a $2.95 billion contract to design and build another of the four new jails, in Brooklyn.
