Turner Construction begins Albany airport expansion
25 August 2023
According to an official news release, Turner Construction has officially commenced a US$100 million renovation project at Albany International Airport, located in upstate New York, US.
This initiative is a component of a broader effort led by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, involving an investment of US$230 million aimed at rejuvenating nine airports throughout the state. Within this comprehensive plan, the renovation of Albany International Airport will be allocated a total of US$60 million.
The remaining funding, amounting to US$40 million, will be secured from both the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act as well as the American Rescue Plan. These funding sources were highlighted in a news release from the office of Kathy Hochul, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also affirmed their contribution.
Originally established in 1928, the renovation project will aim to reduce congestion at the nation’s oldest municipal airport and enhance overall passenger movement and experience.
As part of the construction works, Turner Construction will undertake the task of dismantling the current rotunda and pedestrian bridge. In their place, a novel main entrance will be erected, featuring a glass curtain wall that allows ample natural light and is adorned with translucent canopies above.
Furthermore, the project includes the removal of the existing security checkpoint, to be replaced by a more spacious facility situated in a new area.
Other enhancements include the enlargement of seating and waiting areas, the expansion of the airside marketplace, and the establishment of both a public arts zone and a designated play area for children.
