The total amount of sales generated by the world’s top 200 construction contractors in 2022 has been revealed in the ICON 200 table to be at a record-level of US$2.028 trillion.

This figure is an increase on the total amount produced in the previous listing (which was also a record amount) of US$1.968 trillion.

There are a number of factors that contributed to this record-high figure of US$ 2.028 trillion, and one of the main ones is the performance of China-based contractors. Contractors from China account for approximately 44% of the total amount. To put that into context, the country with the next highest percentage is the US with 13.7%.

The performance of the Chinese contractors underlines the strength of the country’s Belt and Road Initiative around the world, as construction activity in China itself in 2022 was down.

US-based contractors also had a strong year in 2022; of the 33 companies in the list 21 saw their placings increase, three stayed the same and nine fell. The percentage total of 13.7% is an increase on last year’s 12.5%.

The top ten contractors in the world by sales contains six companies from China, two from France, one from Spain and one from the US.
