The Blue Circle and Royal Group to develop ‘first wind project’ in Cambodia

The Blue Circle, a renewable energy developer based in Singapore, and Cambodian conglomerate Royal Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work together on a 100-MW wind project in the eastern province of Mondulkiri, about 280 km from Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.

The project will involve the development, financing, building, owning and operating of the wind farm.

Based on the average wind speed recorded, the project’s site is considered “one of the top wind sites in Cambodia and in all of Southeast Asia,” said The Blue Circle.

“The particular wind pattern in this part of the lower Mekong region would drive potential power production mainly during the dry season, from November to April.”

“This seasonal monsoon particularity would ideally supplement hydro power production which represents more than 45% of the energy mix in Cambodia and is providing power mainly during the wet season, from May to October,” added The Blue Circle.

Through this new partnership, The Blue Circle and Royal Group aim to contribute to Cambodia’s 2050 carbon neutrality target, as set by the Ministry of Environment in 2022.
