Tech adoption rises as US contractors face labour and cost pressures

A survey of US-based contractors has revealed the sector’s attitudes towards new technology, operational challenges, and the lack of skills in the sector.

The survey of 683 professionals revealed that 43% of those surveyed said that they had adopted construction management apps.
The survey, carried out by the of Contractor Training Center also showed that 33% use project management software and 32% are using AI-type tools in their businesses.
The survey asked about operational challenges and pressures with the biggest one being material cost fluctuations, with 35% of respondents citing this. Finding qualified labour is an issue for 30% of respondents, with 24% citing managing cash flow.
When it comes to the skills gaps, non-technical skills dominate, with estimating (41%), pricing (33%), project scheduling and management (29%), and bookkeeping (28%) the four biggest skills gaps that were identified.
Regarding training and development priorities, industry professionals prioritise practical, financially-focused training that drives operational control and accuracy. Estimating and bidding job accuracy tops the list at 45%, followed by project management training at 42%.
