Strabag has won the CA$ 290 million (US$ 295 million) contract to build a 15 km wastewater tunnel in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. The company has previously completed a five year, 10 km hydro electric tunnel beneath Niagara Falls in Ontario.

Construction is scheduled for August 2011 to August 2015, using four 3.6 m diameter Caterpillar Tunnelling Canada Corporation tunnel boring machines (TBMs) . The TBMs will be provided by the client, The Regional Municipality of York, Canada. Comprising 16 shafts and several bio-filters the work will improve air quality, and the scheme also involves rebuilding a 3 km upgrade to a near by stretch of road.

Strabag CEO Hans Peter Haselsteiner said, "We have spent nearly five years working on a water tunnel at Niagara Falls with the world's largest hard rock tunnel boring machine. Now, following completion of the tunnelling works, we can turn to new projects and challenges. I am pleased for our employees who have settled into their new lives in Canada and can now remain there. They have done a good job and the administration of York Region is convinced of the quality of their work in Canada."
