Strabag installing 140MW wind farm in Romania

Strabag Romania reached a key milestone on the Deleni Wind Farm, one of the country’s largest renewable energy projects.

Acting as general contractor for PPC Renewables Romania, the company started installing 23 GE Vernova turbines, each with a capacity of 6.1MW.

With a total output of 140MW, the facility will be the largest renewable energy plant in the Moldovia region and among the most significant in Romania.

The project’s investment value was not disclosed. Comparable onshore wind farms in Romania of similar scale have cost between €170 million and €250 million (US$199 million and $293 million).

The scheme is part of the Prowind North Cluster in Vaslui County and expands Romania’s wind generation beyond the Dobrogea region. Strabag said it expects the development to improve grid stability and energy security while bringing local benefits such as job creation, infrastructure upgrades, and long-term tax revenue for the communities of Deleni, Costești and Bogdănești.

Construction began in March with extensive civil, infrastructure and electrical works. Since, Strabag completed 23 turbine foundations, more than 36km of access roads, drainage systems, and 110km of medium-voltage cabling. Four substations were also built to connect the wind farm to Romania’s grid.

Once operational at the end of 2025, it is expected to generate 370GWh annually, supplying electricity to about 62,000 households and reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 215,000 tonnes per year.

The historical region of Moldavia (also known as Moldova) once formed part of the Principality of Moldavia, which in the 19th century was divided between the Ottoman, Russian, and Habsburg empires. Today, its western part lies within Romania, while the eastern part, known as Bessarabia, is part of the sovereign state of Moldova.
