Stockholm hospital for NCC

09 June 2015

Swedish construction company NCC has been commissioned to expand the Södersjukhuset Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, by adding a new treatment centre, and an operation and maintenance building, in a project worth about SEK1 billion (€107 million).

The company said that Stockholm was growing and needed new emergency hospitals, operating theatres and beds.

Svante Hagman, head of the NCC Construction Sweden business area, said, “With these expansions, Södersjukhuset is preparing itself for society’s increasing need for surgical capacity, emergency hospitals and more beds.”

Locum, the property management company owned by Stockholm County Council which has commissioned NCC, also aims to have the new buildings certified to Sweden Green Building Council (SGBC) Gold – the highest SGBC classification.

NCC’s assignment includes two buildings. The first will be a treatment centre with new operating theatres, a sterile centre, a unit for postmortem examinations and a large new emergency unit. The second unit will house the hospital’s operational functions such as a centre for managing the hospital’s waste and refuse, and emergency power.

The new hospital buildings are expected to be ready at the end of 2018. It is claimed that when the new emergency unit opens in 2019, it will be the largest of its kind in Sweden.

NCC and Locum will collaborate on the work, with the first steps consisting of project engineering, planning and costing ahead of the production start.
