Steadying ‘The Rock’: Tutor Perini wins work to stabilise former Alcatraz prison
09 July 2024
Tutor Perini has won a deal worth nearly $50 million to fix deterioration and structural deficiences in the main prison building on Alcatraz Island, off the cost of California near the city of San Fransisco, USA.

Alcatraz was once the location of a federal prison where the US’ most dangerous criminals were housed, but now it serves as a US National Park and the main prison building has become a tourist attraction.
Tutor Perini said its Perini Management Services subsidiary has signed a $48.6 million contract to with the National Park Service for the Alcatraz Island Historic Structures Stabilization and Rehabilitation Project.
The company will abate hazardous materials in the exterior walls and interior construction areas, repair concrete spalls, replace deteriorated steel reinforcement, strengthen unreinforced concrete foundation walls, repair and stabilise exterior windows, and install storm windows.
“The project will provide a safe facility for the 1.4 million annual visitors and staff by increasing the building’s ability to resist seismic forces and resolving aging and weather-related impacts to the exterior walls,” said Tutor Perini.
Construction is expected to begin this month with substantial completion anticipated in summer 2027.
