Skanska has won a US$450 million contract to rebuild the Lindsay C. Warren Bridge in Columbia, North Carolina, USA.

The project for the North Carolina Department of Transportation involves replacing the existing swing-span bridge over the Alligator River, which was built in 1960.

The new bridge will be a high-rise, fixed-span structure that will sit 4.5km (2.8 miles) north of the existing bridge.

The original bridge has been rated “structurally deficient” not because it is unsafe but because it is reaching the end of its lifecycle and has to be monitored, inspected and maintained on a more frequent basis.

Skanska said the new bridge would eliminate mechanical delays and disruptions for travellers by allowing vehicles and marine traffic to flow unimpeded.

It will feature two travel lanes, breakdown lanes on each side, clearance over the navigation channel, and safety railings.

Work is set to start this month and is expected to reach completion in April 2030.
