Skanska has signed a contract worth SEK1.2 billion (€128.25 million) with the European Spallation Source (ESS) to build the second phase of its neutron science facility in Lund, Sweden.

The construction work in the agreement will be performed by Skanska Sweden (75%) and Skanska UK (25%).

This contract for the second phase covers installations in a number of buildings, substations and transformers, ground works including piling, landscape works and concrete works on the target station and experimental halls.

In 2014, Skanska and ESS signed a collaboration agreement for the entire construction project and a design contract for the first stage. The project is divided into several stages, with separate agreements settled at the beginning of each stage.

ESS is a partnership of 17 European nations co-operating in the design and construction of one of Europe’s biggest research infrastructure projects. The first neutrons are expected at ESS by the end of the decade, with the user programme to begin in 2023.
