Six people have died in a fire at a resort construction site in South Korea’s port city of Busan.

Another 14 people were airlifted to safety by helicopter after they took refuge on a rooftop, according to the city’s fire agency.

Work had been underway at a sprawling jobsite covering three buildings spanning 12 storeys above ground and three below when the fire broke out.

A total of 100 people were evacuated, with around 25 sustaining light injuries including smoke inhalation, according to Busan Fire & Disaster Headquarters.

The fire agency said the blaze appeared to have broken out in insulation material loaded near an indoor swimming pool area on the first floor of one of the buildings.

South Korea’s Acting President Choi Sang-mok ordered all resources available to be used to extinguish the fire, his office said in a statement.
