Shopping boom: Demolition time halved with Brokk machines

Premium Content

20 March 2008

Plaza Senayan in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta's financial district offers a range of exclusive shops. Until recently it also had a four-storey, seven-screen cinema, the Studio 21 Cineplex, but in order this was demolished to increase retail space.

The main contractor for this project was the Japanese contractor Kajima, which had to carry out the work under strict limits on noise and vibration, and with no exhaust fumes from diesel equipment. It was clear that doing the work by hand would impact on revenues from retail tenants, so the decision was taken to use two Brokk 180 demolition robots. This halved the demolition phase from an estimated 5 months using manual labour to just 75 days.
