Bauer Spezialtiefbau has started work on foundations for a new coal-fired power station in the Dominican Republic, as a subcontractor to the lead Odebrecht-Tecnimont-Estrella contracting consortium. The client for the project is the national electricity utility Corporación Dominicana de Empresas Eléctricas Estatales (CDEEE).

The scope of Bauer’s work on the US$ 2 billion Punta Catalina project include soil compaction with around 210,000 linear m of stone columns, construction of 50,000 m of polymer-supported bored piles with diameters of up to 1 meter, as well as construction of a 6,500 m2 diaphragm wall, some 1.2 m thick and up to a 30 m deep.

Equipment on the site includes two Bauer BG 28 large-diameter rotary drilling rigs and three vibration units, in addition to auxiliary cranes and small drilling rigs.

The 750 MW Punta Catalina power station is scheduled to go on line in 2017. Located some 40 km from Santo Domingo, the capital of the island nation, the scheme is designed to alleviate the regular power cuts experienced in the Dominican Republic.
